Your insights about life and safety in Syria aligns with everything I've learned so far from expats living there and other sources. My only question is: Is alcohol (mostly wine or beer) sold in special stores for foreigners. My assumption is that Muslims would be prohibited. Of course, I am ready to correct my assumption upon hearing your response.

I am planning to visit my friends in Syria for a week and i was told that tourists cannot travel without accompaniment of a Syrian National. I'm confused, coz' they allow me to apply an entry visa by myself (without sponsor). What if I dont have someone to go with me and my friends will wait at the airport upon my arrival?

Needs anybody's opinion...

Hi,

I'm considering travelling to Syria in the coming weeks. I have heard (from a Syrian national) that only Visa credit cards are accepted in Syria. Is this true? Or are MasterCards definitely also accepted, as your article states?

Is it possible to exchange Turkish Lira into Syrian Pounds? (I am in Turkey at the moment.)

Thanks!

I want to see rural syria. Where are the best regions to visit where I can stay in a village and soak up the rural life. I have no problem with the basic nature of living in such conditions.

Dear Berg,

One American dollar is worth around 46 Syrian Lira at the moment. You can exchange dollars at the airport, banks and exchange booths which are quite numerous in big cities. Most businesses will not exchange dollars, but might accept them as payment, though I highly recommend paying in Syrian currency only so as to get a better deal.
As for your second question, it all depends on how long you plan to stay in Syria. If it's a short stay then I'd recommend bringing cash, if you plan to stay for a while bring an Atm card (provided you check with your bank first if it's ok to use in Syria) or a Visa/Mastercard. Alternatively you can always use a money transfer service like western union if you ever run out of funds.

Is american money worth more than syria money? Should I only take cash with me or should I take little cash with me and use the rest with my atm card at the airport? Should I exchange all my cash to syrian money at the airport only or can I exchange it anywhere like shops, restuarants, hotels, etc.....?
